Autotracer or Hand Redraw: When Auto-Tracing Is Enough
An autotracer turns pixels into paths in seconds, and for some files that is all you need. For logos with small type, soft edges or close colors it usually is not. This page explains where an auto-trace tool works, where it breaks, and what a hand redraw adds, from $7 per image.
- Plain advice on when software is fine
- Hand redraws for files it can’t handle
- Clean paths ready for cutting and print
- Ready in 24 hours, or 6 with rush
What Is an Autotracer?
An autotracer is software that converts a raster image into vector shapes automatically. It groups pixels by color, finds the boundary of each group and fits curves around it. Illustrator Image Trace, Inkscape Trace Bitmap and many online converters work this way. The output scales like any vector, but its quality depends entirely on how clean the source is.
- Fast for bold, high-contrast art
- Weak on blur, gradients and fine lettering
- Output often needs cleanup before use

Autotracer vs Hand Redraw, Case by Case
A quick way to decide before you spend time cleaning up a trace.
Bold Silhouettes: Autotrace Is Fine
One or two flat colors with large shapes trace cleanly in most tools.
High-Res Line Art: Often Fine
Sharp black ink on white at a large size can trace well with tuned settings.
Small Text: Redraw
Letters under a few pixels tall melt together, so type is rebuilt or matched to a font.
Blurry or Compressed Files: Redraw
JPG noise and blur get traced as bumps, so edges must be redrawn with intent.
Close Colors and Gradients: Redraw
Similar shades merge or split into bands; a person decides where each color ends.
Cutting and Engraving: Redraw
Plotters and lasers need closed, simple paths with few nodes, which traces rarely give.

Hand Redraw Pricing
When an autotracer can’t give you usable artwork, a hand redraw starts at $7 per image. Very poor sources, detailed illustrations and many colors take longer and are priced higher. The exact figure is emailed to you before any payment.
- 24-hour standard delivery
- Rush in 6 hours, extra charge may apply
- PayPal, Visa and Mastercard accepted
- Every redraw ships as AI, EPS, SVG, PDF and PNG
Customer Files Every Week?
Shops that receive unusable logos daily send them as they come in. We keep your color and format preferences on file and return each one ready for production.
- Your preferences saved per order
- Daily or weekly volume welcome
- Rush slots for urgent jobs
- Monthly invoicing on request

What a Hand Redraw Adds Over an Autotracer
Shapes, not pixel outlines
An artist draws a circle as a circle and a letter as a letter, so curves stay smooth at any size.
Fewer, better nodes
Light files cut, engrave and stitch cleanly, and they are easy to edit later.
Fonts matched or rebuilt
Lettering is set in the right typeface when it can be identified, or redrawn when it can’t.

Typical autotracer output
- Wobbly edges on straight lines
- Small text merged into blobs
- Hundreds of stray fragments
- Gradients split into bands
Hand-redrawn by our vector artists
- Straight lines that are straight
- Readable type at any size
- Only the shapes the design needs
- Solid colors or clean blends
Example: A Food Truck Logo That Wouldn’t Trace
Example: a food truck owner runs a low-resolution JPG logo through an autotracer and gets lumpy letters that a vinyl cutter can’t use.
- The brief
- Rebuild the logo for a full truck wrap and a cut vinyl decal, with the same colors and lettering style.
- What we do
- An artist identifies the typeface, redraws the illustration as clean closed shapes and sets colors to Pantone matches.
- What you receive
- AI and EPS for the wrap printer, an SVG for the cutter, a PDF for approval and a transparent PNG.
How It Works
Upload your image
Send the original file, and the autotraced result if you have one, so we can see what went wrong.
Receive your quote
You get the price and delivery time by email; the redraw starts after payment by PayPal, Visa or Mastercard.
Redraw and QC
An artist rebuilds the design by hand, then QC checks paths, nodes and colors.

Autotracer FAQs
What is an autotracer?
An autotracer is software that converts a pixel image into vector shapes automatically. It groups pixels of similar color and fits curves around each group. Illustrator Image Trace, Inkscape Trace Bitmap and many online converters are autotracers. They are fast, but the result depends heavily on how clean and sharp the source image is.
When is an autotracer good enough?
An autotracer is usually fine for bold, high-contrast artwork with one or two flat colors, large shapes and no small text, provided the source is sharp and large. If the trace looks clean when you zoom in and the node count is low, you may not need a redraw at all.
Why does my autotraced logo look lumpy?
Software traces every pixel edge, including blur, JPG noise and anti-aliasing. That turns straight lines into wavy ones, merges small letters and adds hundreds of extra nodes. A person ignores the noise and draws the shapes the designer intended, which is why redraws look crisp.
Can you fix a file that was already autotraced?
Yes. If the trace is close, we simplify the nodes and correct the shapes. If it is badly broken, we redraw from the original image instead. Send both files when you can, because the comparison shows us what you need kept and what went wrong.
How much does a hand redraw cost?
Hand redraws start at $7 per image for straightforward logos and graphics. Very low-quality sources, detailed illustrations and many colors take longer and are quoted higher. You get an exact price by email after uploading, and work begins once payment is made.
Which file formats do I get?
Every order includes AI, EPS, SVG, PDF and PNG, and we can add DXF or CDR for cutters and engravers on request. Files come with fonts converted to outlines, so they open correctly on any computer, plus two free revisions and our 100% money-back guarantee.
